AB (Alternative Breaks) is a non-profit, volunteer, student-led orgaization that promotes community involvement. The University of Maine's Black Bear Chapter of AB is recognized by UMaine Student Government, and our groups focus on volunteering throughout the United States, with occasional international based trips. A sorting ceremony takes place at the end of September that places the members into smaller, 12 person groups. These groups each focus on a different social issue, and participate in a number of service learning, fundraising, and bonding activities throughout the year, culminating in a week-long service trip during spring break selected by the site leaders. AB is not just another student organization - it's a real community. It's a wonderful place to gain leadership skills and build lasting friendships.

The purpose of this organization, Camp Kesem, is to provide leadership and volunteer opportunities for the students of University of Maine and the consortium while serving the Maine community. Camp Kesem recognizes and embraces the often-overlooked population of children affected by a parent’s cancer. A one-week long summer camp will be organized each year for children six to eighteen years old whose parent or primary caregiver has had or currently have cancer. No other type of child may participate in the camp. Camp Kesem will be a place where these children can experience the simple joys of childhood and relate to other children in similar situations. Student leaders of Camp Kesem will organize all aspects of the camp and fundraise enough money for every child who attends the camp to do so for free.

Ratio Christi meets regularly to discuss the evidence supporting Christian belief, as well as to interact intellectually with various other worldviews and faith perspectives. Further, through campus-wide events, we will encourage all students and faculty to interact with Christian thinkers on an objective, intellectual basis. We also will attempt, at least once per year, to create a platform for Christian and non-Christian thinkers to interact with the academy at large in the form of a public discussion, lecture or debate.
