Best Buddies is an organization that gives individuals with IDD's or (Intellecutal developmental disabilities) an opportunity to have one to one friendships as a college experience with the students of UMaine. We meet monthly with the whole group, one to one relationships are required to meet monthly outside of the club and publish "friendship updates" on Best Buddies Online. Best Buddies is a very care free and lighthearted environment for students and buddies. Our buddies in the surrounding area look forward to events and time spent with students going to football, basketball, and hockey games whereas they would not have the chance to do so without this organization. Being simply a friend and not a paid worker to our buddies gives them a chance to open up their small circles of people they typically have.

Engineers Without Borders UMaine is a student-run chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA. We partner with communities in developing countries that require engineering solutions that they lack technical expertise and/or financial resources to implement themselves. We design, fundraise for and promote these projects. We offer students hands-on, real-world engineering experience in a professional environment. We also have many opportunities for business students in regards to fundraisers and grant-writing. We provide opportunities for students to network with professional engineers (especially as we are partnering with EWB Portland, a chapter comprised of professional engineers, for our newest project). Additionally, we provide students with the opportunity to travel abroad to the communities we work with to gather data and implement their designs. As of this summer, we have a new project: a water distribution system we are repairing and replacing in Ixtupil, Guatemala.

The purpose of MEA is to enable students to do the most good possible for their local and global community with the limited time and resources available to us as college students. This group will also promote an understanding of what it means to be ÔÇ£effective altruistsÔÇØ. These goals will be achieved through a monthly service project, along with a fundraiser to a Givewell-approved charity overseas. WeÔÇÖll alternate between community service and global giving, while meeting regularly to discuss how we can do the most good.

The mission of the MBS Corps is to be the outreach organization of the Maine Business School with a focus on primarily helping smaller Maine-based non-profit organizations where we can have a greater impact. We also seek to help our students develop their leadership, organizational, management, marketing and other business skills while developing friendships and networks in a fun, supportive environment. Partners for World Health - UMaine Chapter was created to get more students involved in an opportunistic program which benefits the local community, hospital and healthcare systems, as well as developing nations. PWH - UMaine will enlighten students to health care on an international level as well as provide students with the chance to learn about our environmental and health care impacts. With two major hospitals in the Bangor area, PWH - UMaine implements sustainable recycling systems and reorganizes and redistributes medical supplies to nations in need. At the end of the school year, the hard work of the students is celebrated with an opportunity to partake in international trips to deliver the medical supplies and implement them in a hospital overseas.

SHR is an organization dedicated to introducing the pillars of harm reduction to this community. Harm reduction is primarily associated with drug use, but can be applied to more things. Over the period of official recognization, SHR has turned its focus to drug use and Maine Day. The campus community is not immune to the social phenomenon of drug use: people will use drugs but SHR will allow the resources to provide harm reduction. Harm reduction can be applied to many things: CPR, seatbelts, and anything that minimizes long-term damage to a human!

The Hidden Opponent is an advocacy group that raises awareness for the mental health of student-athletes. We promote the conversation of mental health within UMaine athletics, educate about mental health and how it plays an important role in the lives of student-athletes, and are an outlet for athletes involved in D1 athletics, or former athletes, to share stories and recognize that they are not alone. Some activities the group does include: Mental health awareness "Green-out" games, mental health forums for athletes, providing resources such as therapists and mental health professionals to UMaine athletes or former athletes, zoom guest speakers, online events run by the national organization, awareness intramural softball/kickball games within athletics teams, and more.

The UMO TYPE-ONE-derful! Diabetes Club is designed for students with big hearts and faulty pancreases! It provides opportunities for diabetic students to learn from each other, voice their needs and experiences, build friendships, and find support from fellow Type 1 diabetics.

Our purpose is to offer University of Maine nursing students an international experience that focuses on global health. Nursing students who are interested in enhancing their understanding of global health issues as well as providing humanitarian health care related assistance to an underserved population, will have the opportunity to participate in an international experience. This will be a professional and individual growth experience, which will improve the lives of families in areas where human welfare is underserved as well as further our understanding of global health. Serving others will develop an awareness of health care needs, personal growth, and will define each individual within the nursing profession.
